I don't think Hendrix was out of his league breathing the rarefied air of Miles and Tony. Gil Evans once said: "Miles changed the approach of the way a trumpet was played. He was a sound innovator, you don't get too many of those." I agree with that statement. Tony's drumming approach was innovative too. Hendrix, like Van Halen, changed the way guitarists played. He was every bit the innovator Miles and Tony were.

By the way, Mitch Mitchell (what a name) played some very fast and furious drum flurries his own self and I think Hendrix would've thought, "Oh yeah, Tony! This is Mitch Mach II, III & IV."

Too bad about he & the other fantastic musos we lost over the yrs. What would have been if not for the big lie [those confounded substances]...that session would have been a Monumental Musical Moment for sure.

Miles autobiography says Tony got Miles into Jimi and that Jimi died the week before they were supposed to go into the studio.

DD, the story I recounted is from a Hendrix biography I spent an afternoon reading in Barnes & Noble in late 2003/early 2004. It is a thick large coffee table book I wished I'd bought because I've never seen it again. Jack Douglas (anyone remember Aerosmith?) told the story; he was going to record the session. Too bad it ended in acrimony.

GAMG, you're one of my favorite pundits at HOD and I respect you as much as I respect anyone here. I like Miles and Tony more than Jimi, too. But Hendrix was an innovator who changed millions of guitarists' paradigms and helped Fender much the way Ringo helped Ludwig. His estate is worth many times the amount of Miles' and Tony's combined.

Art is fun to argue about because, like religion, it's so subjective but numbers cannot be disputed.

I was just kind of being a <s>music-snob-nazi by pointing out that TW was musically superior & had more chops & virtuosity of styles, IMO of course</s> snoot... [img]tongue.gif[/img]

But in the long run, it's like was said; all subjective AWA relative [esp moreso in some of yer more rural areas! ;-p j/k], & what counts is how you move people [or perhaps oneself! ;-p] in the end. [It appears i moved your end by my post!] I wouldn't nec say it's up to how many were affected, as that's akin to the mob rules factor, but if even one or a few are moved or touched it's still valid & all good...but i wax philosophic...

Basically...<s>It's like trying to compare musos like EVH to Allan H</s>...i was being <s>one of those galdurned pr**ks that i don't even care for </s> a punk... [img]wink.gif[/img]
